The legend of maui is that he travelled around the pacific in his Waka navigating by the stars and doing many great feats like capturing the sun with only flax ropes to give us more time in the day a the magical fish hook made from a jawbone that he used to pull up the north island (Te Ika Maui) of New Zealand from the Pacific ocean.

This Piece is made from silky oak which is a widespread tree that grows all over the world. This wood represents all the different cultures that makes modern day Aotearoa/New Zealand. The flax weave pattern represents the flax ropes that he used to hold the sun.
