About Wood Grain NZ

Wood Grain NZ is a New Zealand-based woodworking design studio, specializing in the creation of both commercial and artistic works through the craft of wood-turning and woodworking.

Founded and led by artist, designer, and maker David Gillard, Wood Grain NZ is the result of a lifelong passion for timber and craftsmanship. David’s journey with woodworking began in 2009, and since then, he has never looked back. Initially exploring furniture making, he expanded into the art of wood-turning in 2013, developing a practice-led exploration of functional and sculptural wood-turned objects. Every piece is carefully handmade in his Auckland studio.

Over the years, Wood Grain NZ has completed commissions for a wide range of clients—from movie set designers and large corporations to everyday New Zealanders seeking unique, handcrafted pieces. We have also proudly exhibited works in galleries and participated in numerous exhibitions across New Zealand.

David believes in the beauty of individuality: no two pieces are ever the same. Each creation is a one-off, shaped by the natural character of the timber, the design, and the artistry behind it. Every work is a homage to the incredible variation found in wood both from New Zealand and abroad.

We are committed to sustainability. All of the timber we use is either salvaged from properties under development around Auckland or sourced through eco-friendly processes. Our goal is to craft pieces that are both beautiful and functional, blending the organic qualities of wood with the everyday needs of the home or workplace.

David’s work has been recognized with multiple New Zealand art awards, including honours at the Franklin Arts Festival, Royal Easter Art Show, The Art of Wood Exhibition, and more.
